The Legend

The File That Never Closed

Mothman sighting report legend scene, colossal moth above the Silver Bridge under a full moon

It starts as paperwork. A date, a stretch of road, two headlights sweeping the old TNT plant north of Point Pleasant, and a line where the typewriter hesitates: tall as a man, wings like a moth, eyes that burned red.

On November 15, 1966, two young couples told deputies a grey winged figure had chased their car toward town at highway speed. Within a year more than a hundred witnesses had filed reports like it, farmers, firemen, whole families, all reaching for the same words in the same shaken voice.

A sighting report is a strange kind of document. It is officialdom trying to hold something that will not sit still, coordinates and case numbers wrapped around a pair of red eyes. The file stays open because the town never got an answer, only a bridge that fell thirteen months later.

The design sets the moth above the Silver Bridge in vintage field-guide cream, printed on garment-dyed heavyweight cotton. For the ones who read the report and believe the witnesses.

They wrote it up as a bird. Nobody who saw it believed that.

The craft

Real ink, real weight, no plasticky patch.

This shirt is dyed after it is sewn, not before. The color soaks into the cotton and settles deeper around the seams and collar, so it wears in instead of out. No two come out exactly alike, and that is the point.

The art is printed with DTFlex, a glue-free transfer with clean edges and none of the thick plasticky square cheaper prints leave on top. It stays flexible, moves with the fabric, and will not crack, peel, or fade in the wash.

The details

Garment & fabric

100% ring-spun cotton, 6.1 oz heavyweight. Comfort Colors 1717, garment-dyed in small batches. Relaxed unisex fit, pre-shrunk, side-seamed, with a sewn-down collar that keeps its shape.

Print method

The art is printed with DTFlex, a glue-free direct-to-film transfer applied with heat and pressure. It bonds to the surface with clean, fine edges, with no thick plastic square, no glue residue, and no glossy patch. It stays flexible and will not crack, peel, or fade in the wash.

Care

Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colors. Skip the fabric softener, and air dry when you can. If you tumble dry, keep it low, and never iron directly over the print. Garment-dyed color keeps settling with every wash, so a little softening is a feature, not a fault.
