The Legend

The Landing on the Fisher Farm

Flatwoods Monster: The Braxton County Landing legend scene

A hooded shape at the top of a hill, and a beam cutting down through the dark at the people who came to look. They ran. Everyone who tells this story agrees on that part.

On the evening of September 12, 1952, a group of boys in Flatwoods, West Virginia saw a bright object cross the sky and drop onto a farm. They climbed the hill with Kathleen May and a young National Guardsman. In the mist they met a towering figure with a red face, a dark pointed cowl around its head, and glowing eyes. A choking metallic smell hung in the air. Some were sick for days.

The Flatwoods Monster is the Cold War in a single silhouette. It arrived the way the era expected visitors to arrive, out of the sky, wrapped in fear and sulfur. Braxton County kept the story and now keeps the statues.

Printed on heavyweight garment-dyed cotton in true navy, the green and gold of the beam holding bright against the dark ground. For the ones who would still have climbed the hill.

Ten feet tall, a spade for a head, and eyes that threw light.

The craft

Real ink, real weight, no plasticky patch.

This shirt is dyed after it is sewn, not before. The color soaks into the cotton and settles deeper around the seams and collar, so it wears in instead of out. No two come out exactly alike, and that is the point.

The art is printed with DTFlex, a glue-free transfer with clean edges and none of the thick plasticky square cheaper prints leave on top. It stays flexible, moves with the fabric, and will not crack, peel, or fade in the wash.

The details

Garment & fabric

Print method

The art is printed with DTFlex, a glue-free direct-to-film transfer applied with heat and pressure. It bonds to the surface with clean, fine edges, with no thick plastic square, no glue residue, and no glossy patch. It stays flexible and will not crack, peel, or fade in the wash.

Care

Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colors. Skip the fabric softener, and air dry when you can. If you tumble dry, keep it low, and never iron directly over the print. Garment-dyed color keeps settling with every wash, so a little softening is a feature, not a fault.
